Human Resource Planning Template

Human resource planning can be defined as the continuous and strategic process of analyzing and identifying current and future human resource needs in order to maintain a healthy and steady stream of employees working in an organization.

Employees are often referred to as a company’s most valuable asset. Human resource planning focuses on this idea, by helping organizations determine the right fit of employees, and at the same time properly and carefully fulfilling business demand.

Why is Human Resource Planning Important?

Human resource planning is extremely important because it helps companies and HR teams to systematically think ahead. HR planning should be an overall strategic plan of any organization because it identifies quality and it ensures that your company will not face an employee shortage or surplus. In other words, it ensures the right number of people, the right type of people, working together at the right time and place.

Filling positions may sound like a simple gig, but truly growing as a company is no easy task. Despite the fact that organizations do not run without employees, many companies do not recognize the importance of building and following a strategic human resource planning process. And, in those cases, the lack of a strategic HR plan will turn out to be a bump in the road sooner or later.

What are the Basic Steps of Human Resource Planning?

  • Recognize and asses your current situation. Before you start hiring, you need to know where you are standing. This means you need to analyze your staff; know their skills and how they see themselves in your organization. Why? Because it’s important to know that the right people, with the right set of skills, are working in the right place.
  • Forecast your needs. Now that you are fully aware of what your current staff situation is, you will need to think ahead. Basically, you will be answering a few questions: Will you need to grow your employee list? Will your company need a stronger workforce? Or rather, based on your staff’s set of skills, will they need to acquire new skills through training?
  • This step relies on recognizing whether your company is in need of hiring new talent and researching the market’s current offer of the talent you are demanding.
  • Delivering talent. After you’ve recognized your company’s needs, it’s time to deliver new talent. This step focuses on recruitment, selection, and hiring, and it’s crucial for your HR process, as you will need to find and select the right fit for your company.
  • Evaluation. Once your human resource plan has been in motion for a considerable amount of time, it’s time to analyze and evaluate the results. Has the process helped your company? Have you been able to maintain your staff? Has there been a shortage of employees? Have you selected the right people with the right set of skills?
